Breaking stereotypes, a movie based on menstruation or periods has just won the OSCAR. An India based documentary ‘Period. End of Sentence’ scripted history by winning the Best Documentary Short Subject at the 91st Academy Awards. Guneet Monga is one of the producers of this film who has also produced fantastic movies like Masaan, Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1, and Lunchbox.
The movie was directed by 25-year-old filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi and produced by Guneet Monga. A woman director has won the award which is rare and left all the women across the world proud of her.
“I can’t believe a film about menstruation just won an Oscar… A period should end a sentence, not a girl’s education,” said an elated filmmaker Rayka Zehtabchi as she picked up the award for Best Documentary Short for Period: End Of Sentence.
Before winning the highly decorated award, Guneet talked to News 18 in an interview and said, “A bunch of students in Oakwood School, 12-14-year-old girls, had the idea of making this film. They did a crowd-funding campaign on Kickstarter. One of their mothers, Stacey Sher, who is my mentor and has also produced some Tarantino movies, got in touch with me.”
She had further said, “Landing an Oscar nomination isn’t easy. It’s not just about making a good film. The nominations are an organic process, but the shortlisting depends on a number of factors, like how many awards has your film won in the past year, why it should be in the top 10. Once it’s in the top 10, then the documentary department at the Academy votes to select the top 5. Making your film visible in the festival circuit puts it on the map. The more press you generate and awards you win, the better it is for the film.”
This movie is in the race with other films like Black Sheep, End Game, Lifeboat and A Night at the Garden.
Well, making this documentary which showcases the problems surrounding periods in rural areas, Guneet has done a great job and made India proud for always as such movie coming from the nation like India is a big deal.
