Celebrated every year on March 8th, Women’s Day is a symbol of the strong and bold women all around the world. It is a reminder of the strength of the women and their journey towards fighting for their rights.
History and Significance of Women’s Day
International Women’s Day has been celebrated for over a century now. It can be traced back to 1911 when the Socialist Party of America declared this day to commemorate the New York garment worker’s strike.
Clara Zetkin, a German Marxist, from the early twentieth century was the first to organize it in 1911.
At that time more than a million women marched through the streets to claim the right to vote and hold public office. Those women also protested against the discrimination against sex discrimination at the workplace and demanded fair pay.
Until 1967, when the United Nations recognized the day and began celebrating it as the International Women’s Day, which we know today, this day was mostly observed by the communist countries and socialist movements.
The day is now observed as a national holiday in several countries. However, many countries still overlook this day, making it a day of protest or drama. International Women’s Day, in some countries such as Bulgaria and Romania, is celebrated as Mother’s Day equivalent.
The Theme for International Women’s Day 2021
The theme for this year’s International Women’s Day is #ChoosetoChallenge. It indicates that a “challenged world is an alert world, and from challenge comes change”.
We can all choose to challenge the fears that are holding us back to rise and achieve everything this year and become better human beings as a result.
