Celebrations broke out at weightlifter Vikas Thakur’s house here on Sunday evening after he added another medal to the nation’s tally in the ongoing Commonwealth Games at Gold Coast in Australia.Vikas secured bronze in weightlifting in the below 94-kg category.
He lifted a total of 351 kg (159 kg in snatch and 192 kg in clean and jerk) to finish at the victory podium.As the event concluded, a large number of sports fans, relatives and neighbours thronged Vikas’ house to share his achievements and celebrate with the Thakur family at the Railways quarters near the Raikhy chowk.Vikas’ parents, Brij Lal Thakur and Asha Thakur, joined the visitors in celebrating their son’s feat.
They offered sweets to them and thanked the Almighty for this achievement.Hailing from Patnaun village in Hamirpur district of Himachal Pradesh, the family shifted here 32 years ago. Vikas’ father works as Mail Express Guard with the Railways and are currently posted at Ludhiana.Steven Kari of Papua New Guinea won gold with a lift of 370 kg (154 kg + 216 kg) while Canada’s Boady Santavy with 369 kg lift (168 kg + 201 kg) secured silver.
He is also two times Junior Commonwealth Champion during 2012 and 2013.A warm reception awaits Vikas on his arrival here. He will be received at the local railway station and accorded a hero’s welcome for his achievement and bringing the city name on world map, once again.
