The preparations for the two-day Kisan Mela, slated for September 21 and 22, are in full swing at Punjab Agricultural University (PAU). Celebrating the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev, the mela is based on the theme, “Pawan Guru Paani Pita Mata Dharat Mahat”.
Baldev Singh Dhillon, Vice-Chancellor, PAU, has called upon the farmers and their families to participate in the mela. “The Kisan Mela disseminates and updates the agricultural knowledge of the farmers through field demonstrations, exhibitions and technical sessions. Not only this, even farm women are equipped with improved household management practices. This year, the mela is a special fair as it celebrates the 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, who adopted agriculture as his profession and promoted dignity of labour,” he stated.
Navtej Singh Bains, director of research, PAU, said farmers’ participation in the mela would help them in gathering information about recommended varietal, production and protection technologies, thus, helping them further in realising the goal of agricultural diversification and conservation of natural resource base.
Jaskarn Singh Mahal, director of extension education, PAU, said during the mela, field demonstrations and elaborate exhibitions on improved varieties, production and protection technologies, beekeeping, mushroom cultivation, nutritional gardening, protected cultivation would be organised for farmers. Seeds of improved varieties of crops, vegetables and fodders, saplings of fruit plants and farm literature will also be sold to the farmers. Besides, an exhibition of farm inputs including fertilisers, pesticides, implements and farm machinery would also be put up at the mela ground, he added.
