A man lost his life while trying to save his 20-year-old daughter from drowning in Sidhwan Canal near Verka Milk Plant on Ferozepur Road here today. He, however, managed to save his daughter before being washed away by the strong current.
The deceased has been identified as Vikas Sood (47), a resident of the New Town area in Moga. He had come to Ludhiana with his ailing wife Neeru and daughter Loveleen to take medicine. Before visiting the doctor, Vikas stopped on the canal banks where his daughter went to release ‘havan’ material into water.
According to sources, while releasing the ‘havan’ material into water, the girl slipped and fell into the canal. To save his daughter, Vikas jumped into the canal.
Vikas, who did not know how to swim, managed to save his daughter but was himself washed away by the strong current. On hearing the cries of his wife and daughter, a large number of people assembled there and informed the police.
Soon, a team from the Sarabha Nagar police station arrived there and took Vikas out of water with the help of divers. He was rushed to the nearby hospital where the doctors declared him brought in dead.
The investigating officer, ASI Gurmukh Singh, said the police had sent the dead body to Civil Hospital for post-mortem. The police have launched inquest proceedings after registering a case under Section 174 of the CrPC.
